I thought this would be a perfect time to post this blog due to the fact that it is April 15th and it is still sleeting, snowing, and hailing here in Michigan. Weather often affects people’s moods. Sunlight beaming through clouds can lift our spirits, while a dull, snowy day may make us feel gloomy. Many people do not adapt well to the increased darkness and colder weather. They experience an increase in depression and pain, feel lonely and isolated, do not want to go out and get sick easily.
The medical term for this is SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and the treatment most doctors prescribe is light therapy, antidepressants, exercise and counseling. SAD does not only happen in the winter others experience symptoms with the onset of summer. They become highly anxious and easily agitated. They also suffer from insomnia. The specific cause of seasonal affective disorder remains unknown but many factors play into it. The main factor is the decrease in sunlight may disrupt your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm) and lead to feelings of depression. This one factor lowers your serotonin and melatonin levels which both play roles in your sleep and mood. After reviewing what few studies have been done and doing my own personal research I believe Reiki would be very beneficial.
Reiki helps depression and “the winter blues” by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous and immune systems to bring feelings of wellness and happiness. Reiki also helps in bringing trapped emotions to the surface that may be causing your depressive symptoms. When we clear and balance our systems (body, mind, spirit), we feel renewed and fresh. Unresolved issues such as trapped emotions can cause inner stress and conflict that if left unhealed causes illness and depression.
Even if there were no scientific studies showing the effectiveness of Reiki in increasing body system functions, or improving pain and depression, we know it feels amazing. Stress seems to disappear during and immediately after a Reiki treatment. It brings about faster healing, grounding, and balance. The relaxed state can often lead to more beneficial ways of dealing with life.
