Smudging is the Native American practice of burning sacred herbs and using the smoke to clear and cleanse negative energy, and invite in positive energy. I smudge myself any time I feel my energy draining, and I also smudge my entire home at least once a week. Smudging is also the first thing I do before a Reiki, Emotion Code or Body Code session.
Most people keep their sage in an abalone shell, Abalone not only looks beautiful, it has its own healing properties. However, if you can’t find one keeping your sage in any type of plate or bowl works just as well.
Common plant materials used for smudging are sage, cedar, sweet grass and lavender.
White Sage: The best known and most popular used for spiritual cleansing and protection. Also believed to assist in attracting both prosperity and wisdom.
Blue Sage: A lighter ‘fresher’ smoke with floral overtones compared to White Sage. Used to purify, cleanse negativity and hatred and open the way for spiritual healing and calmness and to pave the way for spiritual prosperity and health.
Black Mugwort: Mugwort, also known as Black Sage, has a wonderful highly aromatic sweet herbal smell, and can be burned for many spiritual cleansing and blessing purposes. It not only is used in assisting meditation but also believed to drive out evil spirits and negative energy. Burned in the evening the material is believed to encourage both a restful sleep and plentiful dreams.
Dragon’s Blood: Dragon’s Blood Smudge is White Sage infused with Dragon’s Blood Resin. Dragons Blood resin has long been used for purification and protection purposes. It is used to drive away negative energy and spirits and is believed to assist in attracting what you wish for. Two powerful spiritual cleansing and protection items in one stick!
Each time prior to smudging I always set my intention in my mind this is a main component when doing this ritual, I repeatedly say a mantra out loud while I’m smudging. Traditionally used in ceremonies and spiritual cleansing, the smoke is believed to cleanse a space or the body and aura ,driving away negative energy and reconnecting with mother earth. When smudging , make sure your home is well ventilated, open all doors and windows. Not only does it force the negative energy out of you home, make sure you provide them with an escape route, There is no right or wrong way to smudge. When smudging, do what feels right for you. Holding the smudge stick safely light one end , and blow the fire out. Walk along the perimeter of your home making sure the smoke is filling the corners of the rooms. If there are any specific rooms or items in your home that give you bad energy feel free to focus more on those areas until you are satisfied, Repeating your mantra out loud, having a positive vibe is best at this time. Bringing all the love and light in, and sending all the negative energy out through the doors and windows. Doing this myself, it truly is life changing and I can physically and spiritually feel a difference after I have completed. Please for safety, Do not leave burning safe unattended. Do not use it if you have asthma or respiratory issues. Do not smudge when babies, children, or pregnant women are in the home. Also when finished, make sure your smudge stick is completely extinguished. You can crush the end in dirt or sand, place a pot on top to put it out, or stick the end in water.
